Primary Responsibilities
As a Graphic Designer, your daily activities and key performance areas will include:
- Visual Asset Creation: Design, build, and edit graphic materials for both digital and print media, spanning emails, social media graphics, print collateral, advertisements, and physical signage.
- Brand Management: Actively manage and police the identity, design integrity, and visual branding standards of the UConn Library, consulting with main University Communications when necessary.
- Staff Consultation: Serve as the design consultant and final quality authority for marketing resources created by library staff and student employees.
- Student Supervision: Recruit, schedule, train, and directly supervise student employees within the Communication & Marketing unit, managing their hours and designated payroll budgets.
- Project Management: Lead production lifecycles on behalf of the marketing unit, collaborating directly with writers, editors, and administration to deliver projects within budget limits.
- Media File Control: Research modern illustration trends and maintain organized, highly accessible file management structures for all physical and digital media archives.
Candidate Requirements
To be successful in this role, candidates should meet the following minimum qualifications:
- Educational Background: Possession of a Bachelor’s degree in graphic design or a highly relevant visual arts field.
- Professional Experience: A minimum of three years of verified professional experience working in a related graphic design or marketing production role.
- Technical Mastery: Advanced hands-on experience utilizing Adobe Creative Suite applications, supported by a strong portfolio of previously designed work.
- Leadership Capabilities: Demonstrated past experience providing direct supervision, scheduling, and training to student employees or junior staff.
- Communication Standards: Excellent interpersonal skills with a proven track record of stakeholder communication, including writing responses within standard 24-hour windows.
- Hiring Prerequisites: Must pass a standard pre-employment criminal background check and adhere to the State Code of Ethics.
- Preferred Assets: Prior experience working within higher education or library environments, familiarity with Trello project boards, or exposure to Leonardo Design Studio is highly desirable.
